12.3.2 Submerged Arc Welding (SAW)
During SAW, electric power is applied to an electrode via the nozzle creating an arc.
A specially designed funnel supplies flux that is used to shield the molten metal and
assist arc striking and stability. The arc melts both the flux and the metal forming a
liquid slag that later solidifies and fuses to the base metal, as shown in Fig. 12.10.
