3.1 Subsonic Wind Tunnels for Aeronautics
67
tunnel is equipped with 6-component aerodynamic balances allowing the measurement of average or unsteady forces via the use of piezoelectric dynamometers (see
Sect. 8.2.3). Pressure measurements on the model can be performed with steady (128
channels) or unsteady (64 channels) pressure transducers. Velocity measurements are
performed by 2 or 3-component PIV (at low and high speed), LDV as well as by hot
wire or film anemometry (constant temperature mode).
3.2 Special Purpose Wind Tunnels
3.2.1 Vertical Wind Tunnel
The vertical wind tunnel of the ONERA Lille centre is a low-speed Eiffel type
wind tunnel equipped with an open test section. This installation makes it possible
to generate an upward flow up to 50 m/s in a test section of 4 m in diameter. As
shown in Fig. 3.24, the wind tunnel is contained in a cylinder of 11 m in diameter,
with the engine room above it. A second cylinder of 17.5 m in diameter, forming the
tower visible from the outside of the building, has a height of 36 m. The 800 kW
