12.3 Materials and Methods
In this study, different water disinfection techniques are analyzed and ranked using
VIKOR Multi-criteria decision making techniques considering different evaluation
criteria’s.
12.3.1 Evaluation Criteria
The selection of the best water disinfection method is critical and is always
conducted by considering different criteria. Different disinfection methods are therefore compared by setting different criteria. In this study the criteria considered mainly
includes technical performance, economic feasibility and suitability of the technique.
Different indices can be used by the decision makers to compare various items (Von
Sperling and Oliveira 2010). In this work, reliability, capital cost, operational and
maintenance cost, operational simplicity, pathogen removal efficiency, undesirable
byproduct formation and safety risk are used as criteria for evaluation of water
disinfection methods.
12.3.2 A Capital Cost (CC) and Maintenance and Operation
Cost (MOC)
Economic criteria (e.g. cost) is important indices in evaluating different alternatives.
The types of costs in this study considered are capital, operational and maintenance
costs. CC are those costs related to cost of land, installation and construction of electromechanical works and equipment’s which required for implementing the whole
system (Karimi et al. 2010; Pophali et al. 2011). Whereas, MOC consists costs related
to maintain and operation process such as repair costs, energy cost personnel costs
and chemical product costs (Avramenko et al. 2010). MOC and CC have been widely
used in many studies for ranking of wastewater treatment methods (Curiel-Esparza
et al. 2014; Karimi et al. 2010; Zeng et al. 2007) and water disinfection (Gelete et al.
2020).
12.3.3 Reliability of the System (RS)
Reliability of the disinfection system is a crucial criterion for evaluating different
kinds of water disinfection methods (Crites and Tchobanoglous 2000). In this study,
