Compost application enriches PGPR, which contributes to remediate a polluted
soil by activation of soil metabolisms such as soil respiration and soil enzymatic
activities (Antonius and Agustyani 2011b). Moreover, the application of organic
materials such as compost and biochar is expected to increase the activity of
microorganisms in the soil (Antonius et al. 2015b). Biochar is a carbon-rich material
obtained by pyrolysis of biomass and is known to have a positive effect when used as
a soil amendment on infertile soils, by increasing nutrient availability, improving
soil physical and biochemical properties and biogeochemical cycles, and ultimately
increasing crop production (Sohi et al. 2010).
To be more optimal in utilizing the potential of peatland in Indonesia, a breakthrough effort is needed by applying a combination of compost, biochar and organic
biofertilizer agents, and slow released inorganic chemical fertilizer.
9.5.2 PGPR Propagation
Even though the fermented broth of LOB-Beyonic StarTmik LIPI production consists of cheap nutritious food and feed material products, this innovated simple
technology on plant growth promotion (PGP) is very applicable for the local farmer.
The LOB fermentation medium comprises (1) cornmeal, brown sugar, and
molasses as carbon sources; (2) fish meal and eggs as a source of protein; and
(3) several other additional ingredients such as agar, sprouts, and young coconut
water as a source of vitamins and others. Among these ingredients, sprouts and
young coconut water have multifunctions. According to the results of previous
studies, it is known that the sprouts contain the amino acid tryptophan, which can
be used by PGPR to produce IAA on a fermenter scale (Antonius et al. 2016).
Meanwhile, young coconut water contains multifunctional ingredients that are not
only beneficial for microbes, but also plants because it includes plant hormones,
inorganic ions, and vitamins (Yong et al. 2009).
