was also stimulated by charcoal. The application of charcoal improved the chemical
properties of soil by neutralizing the soil’s pH and increasing its (1) total nitrogen
content, (2) available phosphate content, (3) CEC, (4) amount of exchangeable
cations, and (5) base saturation. Other functions of biochar are as follows:
1. Increase carbon sequestration
2. Reduce CH 4 emissions
3. Increase soil fertility (¼increase carbon accumulation by plants)
4. Reduce chemical fertilizer (¼reduce CO 2 emissions)
5. Increase water-holding capacity
6. Improve O 2 permeability
7. Improve nutrient absorption
It is recommended to produce biochar in an open system using a non-smoke
carbonization apparatus. Biochar can be easily produced with this system and
transported (Fig. 7.16).
