4.2.2 Monitoring by Experts
Rare species that represent diversity are also found in the concessions of WSL-MTI,
such as proboscis monkeys and orangutans. The proboscis monkey inhabits the
riversides in the WSL, while orangutans are found in the peat dome of the MTI.
Since the WSL area is surrounded by two large rivers, Kapuas and Mendawak, the
migration of orangutans is limited, and there is no confirmed habitat in/around the
WSL. Protected areas have been established for all rare species to ensure thorough
management.
The fauna inventory results showed gibbon, hornbill, squirrel, and eagle
(Fig. 4.3). Regular patrols in the wildlife corridor have been conducted as an effort
to conserve this wildlife. Meanwhile, annual monitoring and intensive survey of
orangutan and proboscis monkey are performed with experts.
Preserving animals can be achieved by managing the availability of feed because
the abundance of feed sources can increase a population of animals. The survey
found animal feed in the concession’s conservation area, such as Diospyros sp.,
Tristaniopsis obovata, Ficus annulata, Baccaurea macrocarpa, Aglaia sp., Litsea
sp., Ficus sp., Tetramerista glabra, Chisocheton patens, Ilex cymosa, and
Neonauclea sp. (Fig. 4.4).
