8.4.4.1 Define Object of Study
One Click LCA functions both as a web-based LCIA program and as a Revit Plugin.
While the program supports studies in over 60 countries, this will focus specifically
on the applications of the tool using a North American license. Furthermore, the
software integrates with more BIM programs than just Revit, but again this will only
focus on the Revit integration. The Revit interface is accessed from the “Add-Ins”
tab. Options for both “LCA in Cloud” and “LCA in Revit” will be available, but this
description will focus on the “LCA in Revit” option. The first page displayed after
launching One Click LCA is a page to select what categories will and will not be
included in the study. In addition to choosing what categories the study is inclusive
of, One Click LCA also provides options for the default unit to be used in takeoff
calculations. The default setting is volume, which uses the three-dimensional geometry available from the Revit model, but area and number of units are also both
options. This setting can be changed later on in the process for individual materials.
8.4.4.2 Assign Materials
After defining the scope of the study, LCI data from One Click LCA’s extensive
database is matched to material entries from Revit. This can be done manually, as
described here, or automatically. The automatic mapping provides an additional
time-saving method, and the user has the ability to update any of the assigned mappings to match the specifics of the project. All of the Revit materials are organized
only by category, not separated out by the Revit family. One Click LCA offers several different LCI databases sorted by geographical location, explained in Chap. 7.
This book is rooted in North American practice, and therefore North American data
is being used. After choosing a database the user has the option to further filter the
available LCI data before matching it to the Revit entries. The first filter parameter
gives the user the ability to filter by a wide range of material categories (Fig. 8.13).
If a material category is selected, then only materials included in that category
appear when the user starts to type in the box to map the Revit entry to the One
Click LCA database. Beyond filtering by material category, LCI data entries can
also be sorted by country and type. The last LCI data filter allows the user to filter
by data type. The three options are private, generic, and manufacturer. The type of
data to be used in a study should always be determined during the goal and
scope phase.
Once the appropriate filters have been set, material information can be defined.
After clicking in the box “Map to One Click LCA,” a list of relevant LCI data points
(based on the filters) are displayed. For each data entry, the name of the material,
material properties (thickness and/or density), company (if the data is specific to a
manufacturer), country of origin, and source are all displayed as one-line item
(Fig. 8.14). This allows users to quickly evaluate all options for the material in question and pick the most relevant data source. If no filters are set, all of the options will
