According to Kundu (2003), emergence of new census town plays a vital role in
the increase of population. Eleven villages were considered as census town in the
last census year (2011) in Barasat I CD Block, whereas it was only one in 2001.
Here, it may be concluded that the population concentration is increased more
outside than inside the municipality. This increasing percentage represents the
expansion of urbanization beyond the city limits demographically.
9.5.3 Built-Up Growth and Urban Extent
Barasat I CD Block consists of 2 municipalities, 1 Panchayat samity, 9 Gram
Panchayat (village council), 152 villages, 81 Mouzas and 81 inhabited villages as
per census 2011. Built-up growth inside and outside the municipality has been
examined from built-up area analysis for the years 1990, 2000, 2010 and 2017.
There are two municipalities including Barasat and Madhayamgram. Usually, urban
sprawl occurs in the periphery region of the urban area (Mukherjee 2012). Therefore,
in this portion, inner growth and outer growth of built-up area has been introduced
to understand in different period. In previous part of this paper, it was shown that a
large number of populations increased at the outer part of the municipality.
