A complex psycho-social phenomenon is visible among this section of urban
dwellers that are stuck in the life-death continuum solely for their need of existence
in that locality. While surveying, the residents of the dilapidated buildings expressed
their viewpoints regarding their continuation of habitation which are summarised
as below.
7.5.1 Financial Burden of the Residents
Both the tenants and the owners live in these dilapidated buildings with minimal
living costs. The tenants only pay Rs. 50 to Rs. 200 as monthly rent as opposed to
Rs. 15,000–20,000 paid by residents renting similar properties in contemporary
buildings. However, it becomes difficult for the owners to maintain their houses
with such scant financial support. Nor can they remove the tenants, living for generations, in the absence of adequate tenancy policy and legal remedies.
