practices and improved livestock production practices to reverse soil erosion, restore
water balance, and increase vegetation cover, including drought tolerant vegetation.
98 The NDC also commits Ethiopia to create biodiversity movement corridors,
especially up towards higher terrain, in areas where most of the land is under
cultivation.
99 The biodiversity corridors are intended to minimize biodiversity loss
through enabling the re-establishment and movement of plant and animal species
and varieties to areas suitable for their survival when temperature rises.

5.8 Prioritization and Integration of Soil Governance
by Malawi in Its NDC
The Malawi NDC
101 identifies mitigation options for agriculture that involve soil
management options. These include improved manure management; promoting
agroforestry systems in targeted locations as source of biomass and soil carbon
sequestration.
102 Other actions include reducing use of synthetic fertilizers, encouraging application of organic amendments to fertilizers such as manure and crop
residues that contain the potential to contribute to soil carbon levels.
103
The NDC also prioritizes the planting of nitrogen fixing plants to reduce fertilizer
usage; as well as potentially reduced and zero tillage.
104 These mitigation measures
suggested in the agricultural sector will unconditionally contribute 100 Gg CO 2
equivalent mainly from reduced synthetic fertilizer application, and around 400 Gg
CO 2 equivalent per annum from implementing climate smart agriculture extensively
by 2040, conditional upon support.
105 However, it is important to note that
according to the NDC, Malawi considers the overall mitigation potential of the
agriculture sector to be comparably small.
106 Nonetheless, Malawi’s NDC does
not set out soil management as an adaptation action, or set out the adaptation
co-benefits of the agriculture mitigation actions.
