5.9 Prioritization and Integration of Soil Governance
by Tanzania in Its NDC
In its NDC, Tanzania reports that it is a net carbon sink, since out of a total 88 million
hectares of land areas, 48.1 million are forested land and under different management regimes, current estimated total of 9.03
2 Trillion tons of carbon stock.
107 While
there is no direct reference to soil governance, the NDC sets out adaptation actions in
agriculture that could impact soil management. These include up-scaling the level of
improvement of agricultural land and water management; and implementation of
climate smart agriculture to increase crop yields.

5.10 Prioritization and Integration of Soil Governance
by Kenya in Its NDC
Kenya’s NDC
109 indicates that more than 80% of the country’s landmass is arid and
semi-arid land (ASAL), and that the country has a low GHG emissions profile of
73 MtCO2eq in 2010, out of which 75% are from the land use, land-use change and
forestry (LULUCF) and agriculture sectors.
110 Although the NDC makes no direct
reference to soil management, Kenya commits to mainstream climate change adaptation in land reforms; to enhance the resilience of ecosystems to climate variability
and change; and to promote climate smart agriculture.
111
The Country has put in place as Climate Smart Agriculture Strategy
112 which
identifies decline in soil health and water quality due to climate change and extreme
weather events as a threat to climate smart agriculture. The strategy is one of the
avenues for NDC implementation, and prioritizes actions for sustainable natural
resources management to enhance resilience and adaptive capacity through among
other actions, implementation of integrated soil health management that includes soil
nutrient management, soil and water conservation, and conservation agriculture;
restoration of degraded soils and conservation of soil biodiversity.
