In the city’s economic and technological development zone, the Dagang area is
low-lying along the River; and the central hills run along the east-west direction.
The general terrain is high in the north and low in the south, with an average
elevation of 10–30 m (as is the elevation of the Huanghai Sea, the same below).
Among them, the Zhendong Hengshan Mountain is 126.5 m at the highest; the
Wufeng Mountain on the boundary line of Dagang and Dalu Towns is 209.7 m
high; and the peak of Chuishan Mountain is 258.5 m high.
In the Economic Development Zone, the Dagang area is densely grown with
vegetation, not liable to landslide. It features stable geological conditions, uniform
lithology, and a subgrade bearing capacity of 15t/m
2 . 11.6 km long coastline runs
along the Yangtze River in the new area, with an elevation ranging between 7.19
and 8.74 m. This section of river has the highest water level of 6.37 m and an
annual water depth of 11–8 m, facilitating the construction of ports and water
transport paths, while not producing any flooding risks.
The pilot project I features hilly landform, high in the west and north and low in
the east and south. It is a landfill in valley, rebuilt from an abandoned quarry pit
around which the vegetation is well developed.
③ Climatic and hydrological characteristics
I. Climatic characteristics
The city enjoys a subtropical monsoon climate, being warm and humid, with four
distinct seasons. It is abundant in heat resources and rainfall and has a long
frost-free period. The plain along the Yangtze River lies in the north; and hills with
a height not greater than 300 m run in the south, allowing the winter and summer
monsoons to advance in unchecked. The monsoons have distinct features. The
seasons of a year see greatly varied precipitation and wetness and temperatures,
being clearly distinguishable. The dominant wind direction in the area is from east
to southeast in summer and northeast in winter, with an average wind speed of
3.6 m/s. Spring is warm, summer is hot, autumn is cold, and winter is cold. It is
rainy in spring and summer, especially in the rainy season from mid-June to early
July.
The city has a subtropical monsoon climate with four distinct seasons. The
average annual temperature is 15.4 °C. The prevailing wind of a year is east wind
primarily and southeast and northeast winds secondarily, with a maximum wind
speed of 16 m/s. It has an annual sunshine duration of 2057.2 h and a frost-free
period of 238 days, with the average precipitation being 1072.8 mm/year.
II. Hydrological characteristics
The main rivers are the Yangtze River, the Grand Canal and the Ancient Canal, of
which the Yangtze River, the Ancient Canal, the Tuanjie River, the Haixi River, the
Dagang River, the Dongfeng River and the Kunshan River chiefly contribute to the
surface water of the New Area. The Dagang Section of the Yangtze River (which
flows on the north of the New Area) is about 260 km away from the Yangtze River
estuary, as a tidal reach seeing two times of ebb and flow every day. The high tide
