9.4.4 Part 4: Development of Conceptual Solutions
In the part 4, designers select the resources from step 3.3 and step 3.4 as the Xresource for modification after checking whether the system conflict have auxiliary
tool. Then, an ideal final result (IFR), which is an ideal functioning of the selected
resource in the conflict domain is formulated. In essence, the selected resource has
to perform the actions specified in the formulation of the mini-problem.
If the IFR can be realized, then the problem is solved (4.1–4.4-A/4.4-B). After
realizing the IFR, designers need to check the functionality and the impact on the
environment of the new design such as the procedures in part 2. If the new design is
not a better design or has negative impact on the environment, designers have to select
the more suitable technologies (4.13-B). If the new design has better functionality
and positive impact on environment, then designers can regard the new design as the
conceptual solution (4.13-A).
If the IFR can’t be realized, the separation principles are used to resolve the macro
and micro physical contradictions (4.5-A–4.8-A/4.5-B–.8-B). If all of above steps
have not resulted in a good conceptual solution, there are four suggestions to guide
designers to continue the analysis. The first suggestion is to select other technologies
from the emerging technologies and applied field table (3.4). The second suggestion
is to check the definition of mini-problem (2.10). The third suggestion is to revive
the auxiliary tool eliminated in part 2 or select another intensified system conflict to
analyze according to whether the SC involve auxiliary tool (2.2-B/2.3-B). The last
suggestion is to redefine or reconfirm the engineering problem.
9.5 Example
Electrical motorcycle problem is selected as example to demonstrate the capability of
proposed eco-innovation method. In Taiwan, the gas-powered motorcycle is one of
source of air pollution problem in city. The electrical motorcycle is the solution of air
pollution problem. However, the low battery power capacity and long charging time
for battery are the chief drawback of current most electrical motorcycle. Furthermore,
the carbon footprint of electrical motorcycle using electricity from current fossil fuels
power plant is still high. Eco-innovation idea is required to solve above problems.
Gogoro in Taiwan created a city-based network of battery swapping stations called
the Gogoro Energy Network and designed a high performance electric scooter called
the “Gogoro Smartscooter”. However, if the density of battery swapping stations is
low in some area, then the increasing the traveling range of the electrical motorcycle
will be a problem.
