9.4.2 Part 2: Analysis of the System Conflicts
and Formulation of a Mini-Problem
Part 2 begins with the checkpoint: do the system conflicts involve an auxiliary tool?
If the answer to this question is yes, then the auxiliary tool is eliminated and a new
system conflict is formulated (2.1–2.3-A). If the system conflicts do not contain
an auxiliary, they are intensified. Designers need to select one intensified system
conflicts which better emphasizes the primary function (2.1–2.3-B). At the next
step, Su-field analysis helps to determine whether the selected system conflict can
be resolved by the standard solutions.
After finding the suggested standard solutions, designers can use the emerging
technologies and Su-Field table and the database to select suitable technologies and
apply the traits of selected technologies to the given system conflict (2.5).
If designers develop new design in step 2.5, the new design should be evaluated
to confirm if the functionality is better than that of the original design. During the
evaluation of functionality, it is suggested that the previously defined improving
function be taken as the criterion to compare the old and the new design. Additionally,
the impact of the new design on the environment should also be considered. The
evaluation could be performed with the method of weighing with the help of some
of the potential pros and cons of the emerging technologies list in the database
(2.6–2.9-B). If the new design is not a better design or has negative impact on the
environment, designers have to select the more suitable technologies (2.9-A). If
the new design has better functionality and positive impact on environment, then
designers can consider the new design the conceptual solution (2.9-B). The final step
in part 2 is the formulation of a mini-problem (2.10). The mini-problem for SC with
auxiliary tool (2.2-A) is to find a X-resource that can provide useful action without
hindering the performance of the primary function. The mini-problem for SC without
auxiliary tool (2.2-B) is to find a X-resource that can eliminate the harmful action
while preserving the useful one.
9.4.3 Part 3: Analysis of the Available Resources
In the part 3, designers identify the conflict domain, operation time and the substancefield resources within the system conflict (3.1–3.3). In the step 3.4, designers need
to determine the field of the engineering problem they face, and then select the
corresponding technologies as the resources from the emerging technologies and
applied field table. With the operation of step 3.4, available resources can be extended
to the area of emerging technologies.
