their needs although none of the respondents borrowed money from a bank. Figure 5.6 illustrates the various adaptative measures taken by respondents in various
blocks of the SBR. It is found that these measures were effective to some extent to
reduce the vulnerability to disasters.
Screen Plot and PCA Varimax Rotation
Factor analysis was performed on 45 variables to identify the most influencing
factors. The correlation matrix was used as an input to PCA to extract the factors.
One of the most commonly used techniques is Kaiser’s criterion, or the eigen value
rule. Under this rule, only those factors with an eigen value (the variances extracted
by the factors) of 1.0 or more are retained. After applying the PCA on the database,
we obtained 14 important factors for adaptation strategies. We utilized a graphical
method also known as the Catell (1966) scree test (Fig. 5.7); these are plots of each
of the eigen values of the factors. One can inspect the plot to find the place where the
smooth decrease of eigen values appears to level off. To the right of this point, only
‘factorial scree’ (meaning debris that collects on the lower part of a rocky slope) is
found. After examining the scree plot, only 14 factors were extracted for analysis.
