referred to as a temporary one. The introduction of the WFD required the development of an appropriate methodology for determining the biological monitoring of
surface water in terms of macrophytes [3, 4].
Since 2008, national research on the quality of water resources in Poland and the
possibilities of their economic use are conducted based on the guidelines contained
in the Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC (WFD) of the European Parliament
and of the Council from October 23, 2000 [5]. For the classification of water bodies,
completely new assessment criteria have been introduced, which differentiated not
only by surface water categories (flowing and standing waters), but also taking into
account the specificities of their various types. This directive, focusing mainly on
elements of the biological quality of water, has fundamentally changed the methods
of qualification.
The physicochemical indicators commonly used in the previous periods are of
secondary importance. Therefore, comparing data that determines long-term water
quality in accordance with the WFD requirements is impossible due to various parameters and indicators that were taken into account when assessing water quality. The
monitoring and assessment system for surface water quality is carried out in Poland
by the Inspectorates of Environmental Protection. They publish annual assessments
of the status of surface water quality, which are made available in the form of reports
on the websites of individual inspectorates. Many authors note that the water quality
monitoring system in Poland is not satisfactory. This is due to the small number
of lakes covered by the State Environmental Monitoring. In addition, the adopted
system of water sampling frequency for monitoring water quality is not very accurate
[6].
This volume focuses on assessing water quality, identifying the causes and counteracting the negative effects of water quality deterioration. This will allow the development of a course of action for water managers in the scope of water quality its
protection in the near future. The current research problem is the eutrophication
of lakes and artificial reservoirs [7, 8]. It is necessary to determine the trophy and
natural susceptibility of lakes to degradation, which will allow determining the scope
of activities in the catchment area, protecting individual lakes and determining the
methods of their remediation.
The following are the major update for the book project based on the main book
theme.
1. To ensure the quality of water resources in Poland is necessary to assess and
manage them and their usability. The most practical solution of the reduction of water consumption is to invest in the most modern water recovery and
reuse technology in industrial plants, agriculture, and newly built residential
buildings.
2. Environmentally valuable areas protected by law are components of a broader
system of environmental protection in Poland. To achieve sustainable development of water areas includes their protection also from a social and economic
point of view.
