The percentage share in the total nutrient load discharged into the Baltic Sea by
nine Helsinki Convention signatory countries is shown in Fig. 14.6. According to
the special Report of the European Court of Auditors (2016) [46] and HELCOM
PLC-6 project (2018) [47] Poland continued to be the largest exporter of nitrogen
and phosphorus to the Baltic Sea.
At the same time, it can be noted that the load of nutrients discharged by the
Polish rivers to the Baltic Sea has decreased as a result of the implementation of the
National Program of Municipal Wastewater Treatment (Fig. 14.7).
