Construction of the Malczyce dam on the Oder River
In the area of the central Oder water region, the construction of the Malczyce
water stage is planned to protect against flooding, prevent the effects of
drought, protect the water dam in Brzeg Dolny from under-watering and loss
of stability and to increase the use of the waterway by inland navigation on
the section of Oder below the stage. The planned date of completion of the
investment is 2021 (design work began in 1994, and construction works were
commenced in 1997). The cost of the investment is estimated at 440 million
PLN
The investment includes three-span weir with hydraulically operated steel
flap closures, fixed weir with a length of 256 m, a 190 m long shipping lock
and a 9 MW hydroelectric power plant. Currently, the construction of the
Malczyce water stage is at the final stage of implementation. The main
activities resulting in the achievement of environmental objectives include
among others: flood protection, protection of the Brzeg Dolny water dam
against under-watering and loss of stability (erosion in the period 1925–1992
in the Brzeg Dolny cross-section is 314 cm and in Malczyce 216 cm),
restoration of the level of groundwater lowered due to natural riverbed
erosion below Brzeg Dolny. Additional benefits include development and
improvement of the shipping conditions of the Oder River, strengthening its
position in the Polish transport system
