1 The Principles of Green
1.3.5 Health
Sustainability is healthier for us. One of the principles of living sustainably is to
eliminate processed foods. Consuming only whole and fresh nutrients enables us to
reduce processed foods by minimizing the demand for meal components. It does
not imply that you should become a full vegan but encourages us to look for our
meat from the local butchers rather than factory options. Livestock that has been
raised independently have fewer hormone and antibiotic injections. Healthier diets
are tastier and healthier than mass-produced meats.
What are some of the examples of healthier diets that can enhance our health
while promoting Greenness?
Also, Greenness minimizes the probability of us dealing with health problems.
This is because the fewer waste people produce, the less damage is done to the ozone
layer. If we maintain our sustainability momentum, the ozone may be able to repair
itself. The ozone layer is located in the stratosphere, which sits between 15–30 km
above the planet. It plays a crucial role in absorbing the majority of the ultraviolet
radiation of the sun, thus reducing the amount of radiation that reaches the Earth’s
surface. Since this radiation causes cataracts and skin cancer, the ozone layer plays
a crucial role in protecting our health and preventing radiation from damaging
animals, plants as well as materials. However, waste emissions lead to the depletion
of this layer, thus hampering its efforts in insulating against solar radiation. The
depletion of the ozone layer has been linked to the presence of chlorofluorocarbons
as well as other halogen-source gases within the stratosphere. Many of the ozonedepleting substances are synthetic chemicals that are used in consumer applications,
industrial applications, refrigeration, and fire extinguishers. The generation of waste
from these chemicals harms the ozone layer.
1.3.6 Green Entrepreneurship
Furthermore, Going Green can promote Green entrepreneurship which is responsible for the creation of employment and the alleviation of poverty and hunger. For
example, Wecyclers in Nigeria has been a source of employment for many young
Green entrepreneurs. Started by Bilikiss Adebiyi-Abiola in 2012, the project sought
to solve the problem of trash disposed off carelessly. The initiative has been essential
for enabling poor communities to generate income from waste that occupies the
streets. It is an emblem of community empowerment for wealth creation and a
step towards sustainable livelihoods. Afrocentric Bamboo in Ghana is the other
initiative founded by Winnifred Selby to create employment. It has become an
