10.2.9 Goal 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
The core objective of SDG 9 is to “build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable
as well as inclusive industrialization and foster innovation.” Through manufacturing, countries can provide viable environments for employment (Sachs 2012).
Figure 10.10 shows the contribution of the manufacturing sector to the total gross
domestic product (GDP) of various countries from 1960 to 2017. Today, there has
been significant improvement of mobile-cellular signal coverage and there are signs
that manufacturing will improve in a substantial way. Many countries are investing
heavily in the manufacturing sector as a way of creating jobs. Also, many areas
that had poor network coverage are currently covered because of the increased
investment in mobile networks as a result of many people owning mobile phones.
