this goal is achieved. These challenges should only act as an impetus regarding the
need to improve reporting on the progress and achieve the quality education targets.
Africa has placed its attention on the quantity rather than quality of education.

quality education.
10.2.5 Goal 5: Gender Equality
The main objective of this goal is to “achieve gender equality and empower all girls
and women.” It recognizes gender equality as a basic human right necessary for
a sustainable, peaceful, and prosperous world. The provision of girls and women
with equal access to political and economic representation, education, decent work,
and healthcare is beneficial to humanity and society. This is one of the targets that
has made tremendous progress with a record 143 nations guaranteeing equality
between women and men through their constitutions. The worrying aspect is that
52 of them have not committed themselves to this target (Sachs 2012). Many
nations still embed gender discrimination in their social norms and legal systems.
One of the achievements of this goal is the reduction of child marriages, which
has declined over the last decade. Specifically, child marriage in some African and
Asian countries. These regions have been reported to have the highest rate of child
marriage (see Fig. 10.6). Despite gender equality remaining elusive, significant steps
and commitments have been made. There is a need for more enforceable legislation
that can empower women. Achieving gender equality is one of the key steps towards
delivering transformative and sustainable change.

your strategies will be successful?
10.2.6 Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
The main objective of this goal is to “ensure sustainable sanitation and water
management for all people.” This goal has eight targets along with 11 indicators for
monitoring progress. The first target concerns sanitation and drinking water supply.
As of 2012, it is estimated that 60% of people do not have safely managed sanitation
services, while 30% lack access to safely managed water services globally (Sachs
