engineering. Berg also played a crucial role in organizing the Asilomar Conference
on Recombinant DNA in 1975 (Science History Institute 2017). This brought
together 140 professionals to talk about the ramifications of the technology and
guidelines for regulating its use. The Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to him
in 1980 in recognition for his fundamental studies about nucleic acid biochemistry.
4.12 Future Trends
4.12.1 Africa
Africa will likely face new disease challenges because of climate change. Also,
rising temperatures will affect the habitability of some of the areas. The other trend
is that ocean acidification will alter ocean chemistry as well as marine organisms’
physiology. It could potentially have an adverse impact on coral reefs, fisheries,
and aquaculture, particularly for the numerous African countries where marine and
coastal ecosystems support livelihoods and act as sources of food. More critically,
various organisms will continue disappearing or being vulnerable to extinction,
including the African wild dog, Ethiopian wolf, Pangolin, and rhino.
4.12.2 Asia
The vast population and frequent natural disasters will ensure that climate change
severely affects the region. Asia will continue contributing to global warming
because of China, Japan, and India (three of the top five polluters globally). Also,
transition towards non-emitting energy sources will remain uneven with some of the
nations including India and Qatar continuing to champion for renewables. Extreme
weather events will be experienced, including prolonged precipitation.
4.12.3 Australia
Slezak (2018) predicts that 3 million hectares of Australian forests could be lost
within 15 years because of the booming livestock industry and failure by the
government to initiate restrictions against deforestation.
