4.13 Summary
103
4.12.4 Antarctica
King penguins could become extinct by the end of the century. Overfishing and
climate change could force the king penguin to the edge of extinction.
4.12.5 Europe
Intensive farming practices will contribute to a sharp decline in the Andrena
transitoria bee. Climate change will continue being a key driver of extinction risk
for bee species, and specifically bumblebees. Heavy rainfalls, droughts, as well as
increased temperatures could change habitats, resulting in population decline.
4.12.6 North America
As the North American continent is pushed towards further change, there is a higher
risk of unanticipated impacts, with some being large and irreversible. Sea levels
could continue rising if the current trends continue.
4.12.7 South America
In South America, experts predict that severe weather events may likely become
a common phenomenon. In addition, record-breaking temperatures will also be
experienced along with heatwaves and erratic rainfall patterns. This could lead to
stunted growth and poor harvests.
4.13 Summary
Climate Change
• Climate change leads to the migration of species from habitats, while other
species may flourish depending on the changing conditions.
• This will result in the extinction of numerous species and minimization in
ecosystem diversity.
• Higher global temperatures could also lead to the death of numerous coral reefs.
• Climate change increases precipitation and evaporation stages of the water cycle.
• It leads to the increase of fossil fuels and the rise of carbon content in the
atmosphere.
