Means bearing different superscripts indicate statistically significant differences in a column
(p < 0.05) for a species in different treatments; values are expressed as mean ± standard error (SE)
of three replicate ponds. Means of lengths and weights of three replicate ponds were considered for
length-weight relationship analysis; hence no SE derived
important parameters to be considered. Hence site selection for edible oyster culture
should be done on the basis of the following criteria:
• Protection against excessive wind and wave action (particularly applicable for
on-bottom culture)
• Water quality in terms of sewage and industrial wastes (being sedentary in nature
oysters tend to accumulate conservative substances in the body tissues)
• Water quality in terms of salinity, pH and temperature (salinity requirement for
culture is 20–35 psu, pH requirement is around 8.3 and temperature requirement
is 25–30 °C)
• Tidal characteristics and current pattern (as frequent water exchange is extremely
important for oyster culture)
