Co-operative sold its fine textiles. This year 2019, the Co-operative will participate
once again in the IFAM, but this time in a highly visible pavilion.
Moreover, and as a part of the pop-up store of a small group of six (6) traditional
artisans in the exclusive Urban Zen, IFAM also selected designer Donna Karan’s
Manhattan store.
In these past international participations, garments travelled with special stamps
jointly coordinated by the provincial and the national governments to certify fibre
origin, type and sourcing method.
Cooperativa Mesa Local Laguna Blanca has vast experience, leaving its sustainability footprint which involves an all-encompassing concept consisting of resource
management, revitalisation of good environment-friendly and cultural community
practices, textile diversity and weaving quality, co-operative movement and the
collective as a tool for development, community identity and certainty of a better
future.
Therefore, the production process of lagucho
22 vicuña ponchos can only be
understood within the community development history of this indigenous people.
3.4 Some Institutions and Organisations that Supported
the Co-operative and Consolidated Its Entry
into the International Market
Provincial, national and international programmes support the Co-operative and its
entry into the international market.
Firstly, at a regional level, we should mention Catamarca Provincial Biodiversity
Directorate. Among other functions, it is responsible for ensuring biodiversity conservation, promoting and monitoring the enforcement of regulations on management,
conservation, preservation and sustainable use of different natural resources—fauna
and flora—of the province; and it is the enforcement authority of laws on management, preservation and sustainable use of the natural ecosystems and environments
of the province.

There is also the Provincial Handicraft Directorate, which is responsible for
monitoring and promoting the management and implementation of public policies
intended for artisans who live in the province. It promotes two large handicrafts fairs:
the Fiesta Nacional del Poncho and the Feria Manos Catamarqueñas [Catamarca
Hands Fair].

22 As explained by the locals, lagucho refers to the people and objects from Laguna Blanca.
