flow of the material as a result of shear stress through the thickness of the material
during the material processing. The skin layer of the LCPs shows an overall
anisotropic behavior. This investigation clearly indicates that the molecular orientation and anisotropy in the LCPs have a direct correlation with the method of
manufacturing.
Spinning is another common practice for the fabrication of commercial LCPbased high strength fibers. Compared to the traditional method of spinning, viscous
solution based rayon and aramid fibers are characterized by a high degree of
molecular orientation. The molecular orientation results from liquid crystallinity of
the polymer solution used through the spinning process. The nematic solutions are
spun in the dry jet air gap technique as shown in Fig. 15. This process directs
