pylons, transformer elements, ladders, cableways, and many more
appliances. Also, the packaging of these items is done quite well
using polymeric composites. The eight-seater cableway gondola
was built in 2002 of composites in Saint-Martin-de-Belleville,
Savoie, France, and is shown in . Fig. 2.26.
2.3.10 Sports Equipment
Composites play an important role in the manufacture of sporting
goods. The major sporting goods made out of composites are golf
shafts, racquets, snowboards, bicycles, baseball bats, hockey sticks,
canoes, fishing rods, archery bows, ski poles and skis, surf boards,
etc. These all are manufactured by compression moulding, hand
layup, prepreg layup, pressure bagging, filament winding, and injection moulding. Tennis racquets are made of composites using
spread carbon tows with a reinforced polyurethane matrix. Both
tennis racquets and composite bicycles use carbon fibres (Textreme®)
as the reinforcements. Some of the sporting goods made of composites are shown in . Fig. 2.27.
2.3.11 Healthcare
Composites are used for making fracture braces and orthotic and
prosthetic devices for the locomotor disabled. The use of carbon–
carbon composites have opened new areas of healthcare applications for the creation of prosthetic tilt disc heart valves, hip joints,
and knee joints. There are hoards of support structures made out of
composites and being used in medical equipment, such as X-ray
machines, dialysis machines, etc. Some examples are given here.
