5 MRIs—Composites are made of diamagnetic materials. They
don’t interfere with a magnetic field; therefore, composites
allow the use of large magnets in magnetic resonance
imaging (MRI). Composites are used in MRI housing and
tables. In addition, composite bars are used in the construction of an MRI room to reinforce the concrete walls and
floors.
5 X-Rays—The X-ray table in an operation theatre is made of
composites, preferably carbon fibre-reinforced epoxy resin for
taking the X-ray of the repaired part of the body during
orthopaedic surgery. Composites are transparent to X-ray. The
X-ray machine used in operation theatre is popularly called a
‘C arm’ . The C-shaped X-ray probe enables technicians to take
the X-ray from both the top and the bottom (from under the
operation table) as the film is taken or the X-ray result is seen
on the monitor.
2.3.12 General Engineering
Composites offer many possibilities in the area of general engineering applications, such as piping systems, air duct systems,
storage tanks, pressure vessels, sanitary wares (i.e. sinks and bathtubs), furniture, door panels, door and window frames, etc. The
use of composites in these applications is very significant from the
point of the life cycle cost of these products. The products made
out of composites require quite low maintenance; thus, their life
cycle cost is quite low.
