9.4.3 Eddy Current Testing
Eddy currents are circular electric currents induced—due to
Faraday’s law of induction—within conductors by a changing magnetic field in the conductor. Eddy currents flow in closed loops
within conductors and in planes perpendicular to the magnetic
field. Eddy current testing is possible for carbon fibre-reinforced
composites (CFRC) due to the conductivity of carbon fibres. The
inspection of a product using the eddy current method is shown in
. Fig. 9.17.
Eddy current testing is not possible for glass or Kevlar fibrereinforced composites because they are insulators. Eddy current is
an established inspection method for the detection of cracks, pits,
inclusions, and voids on any metallic conductive surface, including ferrous and nonferrous in nature. This technique is capable of
