slim layer bedding gives sufficient air circulation and forestalls anaerobic absorption
of wastes, which controls the creation of pungent odour. Vermicasts were gathered
from the base of vermireactor secured with wire mesh. The produce acquired
through this procedure is vastly improved both in quality and quantity when
contrasted with different frameworks. In modern day, industrial vermitechnology
highlights automated beds where the two contiguous moving surfaces cause finished
product at the base of the bed to fall through its perforated base and fresh waste is
added to the top.
For small-scale manufacturing, perforated bags are used for proper maintenance
of aerobic chamber. In such case, feed is given once and the vermicasts are collected
after a definite interval. In most of the cases, Box Crate Systems are practiced in
boxes, containers, or trays in different outdoors and indoors settings. Although the
technique requires less space, it is labor-intensive and very hard to maintain the
adequate moisture content during the process of vermicomposting.
10.7 Development of Vermicompost in Rural Regions of
India
Economical agribusiness and natural waste management are twin paths for sustainability in the coming years. In a nation like India where 70% of the population lives
in rural areas and where business spins around agriculture related processes, needed
an advancement to sustain a better livelihood in those regions. Physically, ethically,
and financially, a robust rural community is the major contributors for advancement
of a nation. In the general populace, women comprise almost half of the population,
and women bear a lot of responsibility than the men in horticulture work like upkeep
of domesticated animals, transplanting of seedlings, weeding, reaping, cleaning, and
storage of grains.
Recently, to make rural women monetarily autonomous and to inspire their
economic wellbeing, the Government of India along with different NGOs have
pioneered numerous projects. One such program is ‘women strengthening’ through
‘self-improvement gatherings’. These gatherings are formed to involve women in
various vermicompost related projects to make them self-sufficient financially. In
rural scenario, vermicompost is produced under proper environmental conditions,
and the produce or vermicast are sold in market as fertilizers, while the residual
earthworms of composting are sold in market as a rich source of animal feed
(Fig. 10.2).
Almost 500 species of earthworm are identified across different regions of India
out of the total 2500 species of the world. These earthworms are supplemented with
organic wastes and are cultured in crates, tanks, pits, or containers. However, organic
wastes are either sundried or pre-digested through anaerobic phase and are
supplemented using cow-dung for fast development of earthworm. This is the
process used for conversion of organic substance into black gold.
