Fig. 3.6 Changes of temperature during different composting treatments. Inoculation–the inoculation with AAMC, AC–the alkaline compound treatment, C–the control group. Arrows represent
the turning (Song et al. 2018)
It can be seen from Fig. 3.6 that the inoculated group had entered the hightemperature period (higher than 50 °C) 32 h after starting the composting, showing
the highest temperature of 67 °C, followed by the alkalified group (59 °C). During
the whole composting period, the temperature of the control group was lower than
50 °C. According to stipulation of the UK Environment Agency, the compost pile
can conform to non-hazardous requirement as long as it is kept above 55 °C for 3–5
days. According to the stipulation, the inoculated group and the alkalified group can
satisfy the non-hazardous requirement after they were composted for 5 and 6 days,
respectively.
Due to the generation of a great number of micromolecular organic acids in the
early stage, pH value significantly declined in the early stage of the composting.
The pH of the inoculated group constantly rose during the whole composting period
and finally stabilized. It can be seen that inoculating acidification-resistant complex
microbial inoculants can avoid pH fluctuation of the composting system. With the
generation of micromolecular organic acids in the early stage of composting, as well
as the utilization of the micromolecular organic acids and generation of NH 3 in the
later period, the pH value of the alkalified group decreased at first and then increased.
The control group showed a significant acidification process: after composting for 3
days, the pH reduced to 4.86 and then gradually grew.
From the perspective of land utilization of organic fertilizers, the compost products
with high conductivity show an unfavorable influence on soil microorganisms and
the conductivity of compost products suitable for crop growth should be lower than
2.6 ms/cm. Figure 3.7b reveals that the conductivities of inoculated and alkalified
groups both rose at first and then declined. In the early stage of composting, owing
to macromolecular matters were mineralized into micromolecular compounds, the
conductivity rose. With the advancement of composting process, the micromolecular
compounds were gradually transformed into stable humus matters and therefore
