4 Development of the Standard System for Differentiated …
4.3.4.2 Site Selection
1. The site selection should accord with requirements of development planning of
village and town construction, development planning of land utilization, and the
environmental protection planning.
2. The site should be reasonably distributed by taking into account the location
characteristics of livestock and poultry farms (villages) and taking full advantages
of compost treatment facilities that have been built and plan to be built.
3. The safety protection distance for treatment facilities of manure and compost in
livestock and poultry farms (villages) should follow the regulations in standard
NY/T 682-2003.
4. The livestock manure composting plants and treatment facilities are not allowed
to be built in the following regions:
(a) Conservation areas for sources of living and drinking water, scenic sites,
natural reserves, and residential areas;
(b) Areas threatened by flood or torrential flood and frequently attacked by
natural disasters such as debris flows and landslides;
(c) When constructing treatment facilities for livestock manure near to the areas
not allowed building composting plants, the facilities should be built at the
downwind or lateral downwind direction of the prevailing wind direction
all the year round. The plant boundary should distance at least 2000 m to
the boundary of the areas; and
(d) Treatment facilities of livestock manure should be 500 m farther from
surface waters.
4.3.5 Technological Process
Current composting processes include static-pile composting, forced-aeration staticpile composting, composting with mechanical turning and agitation, and combined
processes. The technological process is illustrated in Fig. 4.2.
4.3.6 Pre-treatment
4.3.6.1 Before composting of livestock manure, agricultural residues such as straw,
bran coat, soybean meal, and mushroom bran are suggested to be added as
ingredients to adjust the moisture content and carbon–nitrogen ratio (C/N) of
the raw material of the compost. In addition, the materials need to be crushed
to ensure that the raw materials meet the requirement of fermentation. The
pre-treated raw materials of compost should meet requirements in Table 4.1.
