Phycoremediation of alcohol distillery wastewater (ADW) with a new Chlorella
sorokiniana obtained from the White Sea, on the northwest coast of Russia, and
cultivated in a high-rate photobioreactor revealed the potential to reduce COD of
ADW from 20,000 to 1500 mg L
À1 (by 75%) within 4 days of cultivation. The
removal percentages of various parameters in this study are presented in Fig. 13.4,
and it was reported that the Chlorella sorokiniana biomass obtained from the postmoderate nitrogen removal efficiency is endorsed for the biodiesel production
(Solovchenko et al. 2014).
3.3.3 Breweries
Breweries also release a large volume of polluted wastewaters rich in organic
contents which can be treated by phycoremediation. de Raposo et al. (2010)
observed that a consortium containing Cyanobacteria could remove nitrogen
(up to 5855 g kg
À1 of biomass day
À1
), phosphorous (up to 805 g kg
À1 of biomass
day
À1 ), BOD 5 (up to 27%), and COD (up to 15%).
A parametric study of a brewery effluent treatment by microalgae Scenedesmus
obliquus, carried out with a light intensity of 12000 lux and 12-hour photoperiod,
reported the maximum dry biomass productivity of 0.9 g L
À1 (Mata et al. 2012).
Further, the two-stage photoautotrophic–photoheterotrophic/mixotrophic cultivation
systems were used for optimizing the lipid productivity of two freshwater Chlorella
