8.2.3 Drop-Hammer Impact Test
The drop-hammer impact test was conducted by using a drop-hammer impact device,
as shown in Fig. 8.4. In this test, the release heights of the drop hammer were 5.0, 8.0
and 11.0 m, and the drop hammer fell as a free-falling body along the guide rails once
the electromagnet release mechanism was manually triggered. The total mass of the
drop hammer is 530 kg, which is composed of the drop hammer frame (200 kg),
weight blocks (6 × 50 kg) and indenter (30 kg), as shown in Fig. 8.5. The indenter is
a cylindrical rigid body with the thickness of 8 cm and the diameter of 20 cm. In the
test, the specimen was pinned supported by the supporting frames with the clear span
length of 1600 mm. Four linear variable differential transformers (LVDTs) were used
