can be adjusted to increase accuracy. In order to achieve this, this study deals with
the methodology and the material used for fabricating FDM parts. Hence, the design
of experiment (DOE) technique connected with RSM has been adopted. To enhance
the overall dimension of the part, the optimal parametric setting has been obtained
by integrating gray relation analysis with RSM.
2 Materials and Methods
A part is built on the FDM machine in an additive manner building a layer over one
another. A heated thermoplastic filament is pushed out from the nozzle opening. Two
nozzles are provided on an FDM Fortus 400mc machine; one of them is used for
part material, and another for supporting material; both of them work according to
the requirement of the part. The qualities required for the material are: (i) It should
adhere to the previously created layer and (ii) it should melt at a temperature provided
inside the chamber. The major problem faced with the FDM part is its dimensional
accuracy. The present study shows the factors affecting dimensional accuracy and
how these factors can be adjusted in order to increase accuracy. In order to achieve
this, this study represents the material that is used and also explains the methodology
of the fabrication of the FDM part related to the DOE approach based on RSM.
2.1 Materials
A common thermoplastic, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS M30), is utilized in
the experimentation. Figure 1 represents the monomers in ABS, which contains
acrylonitrile, butadiene, styrene, and carbon. It is a polymer with a short chain
of polystyrene-co-acrylonitrile and a long chain of polybutadiene in a crisscrossed
manner. ((C 8 H 8 · C 4 H 6 · C 3 H 3 N) n ) is the molecular formula for ABS. The proportion
of each monomer can vary from 20 to 40% for acrylonitrile, 10–30% for butadiene,
and 40–60% for styrene. ABS thermoplastic may also contain mineral (0–2%), tallow
(0–2%) and wax (0–2%).
