The present study is focusing on the effect of the various parameters on the
deposition layer width and thickness, as well as the shaped form at the end of the
consumable rod is also put some impact during layer deposition. Here experimental
investigations are doing for finding exact set of process parameters.
2 Material Characterizations
AA 6351 T6 100 mm in length and 22 mm in diameter are used as a consumable rod
while SA 516 Gr 70 plate 300 × 150 × 6 mm plate is used as a substrate material.
The chemical analysis of materials is given in Tables 1 and 2. A customized friction
surfacing machine set-up is used for the experimental investigation is shown in Fig. 2.
The set-up is available at Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University and developed
under the project of BRFST. The machine is available with the various operating
functionality like control panel, load cell unit, rotating drive and head tilting facility
for set a consumable for on an angle to the substrate plate. The machine had a designed
with maximum spindle speed of 3000 rpm and surfacing speed of 140 mm/min.
Before staring the surfacing operation, the substrate plate was ground to remove the
oxide layer, dust, pits on the surface. The end of the rod was also machined flat to
ensure flat contact/perfect surface contact at the rod-plate interface. During all the
trials, machine is operated on the feed control mode (consumable rod is pushed along
its axial direction against the substrate). Various process parameters are utilized from
the available range of machine to get perfect parameter set respective to deposition
layer width, height and bonding width.
3 Experimental Work
Different set of parameters are taken for performing trials. All the trials are performed
in the manner that we observed the effect of basic process parameters like rotating
