production of industry and agriculture, and played an important role in the
patriotic war. In 1941, he obtained the prediction and interpolation formula
of stationary stochastic process. From 1955 to 1956, he and his student, Y.
V. Prokhorov, the Soviet mathematician, initiated the weak limit theory of
probability measure in function space. This theory and D-space theory introduced by A. B. Skorohod, the Soviet mathematician, are the epoch-making
achievements of weak limit theory (Fig. 8.41).
8.42 Whittle (1907–1996)
Frank Whittle (1907–1996) was a British aviation engineer, inventor, and
founder of jet engine. In 1928, he published a paper on gas turbine and jet
reaction aircraft and put forward the basic formula of jet thermodynamics. In
1930, he obtained a patent for turbojet engine design. From 1937 to 1944,
he was the chief engineer of British Jet Power Co., Ltd. The single rotor
turbojet engine developed by Whittle was successfully operated for the first
time on April 12, 1937. In May 1941, the Gloucester E-28/39 aircraft with
W-1 engine designed by Whittle was successfully tested. Jet fighters such as
“Meteor” and “Vampire” used by Britain in the late and post World War II
were developed on the basis of such aircraft. In the early 1950s, he developed
the world’s first turboprop passenger aircraft “Viscount” and the first turbojet
“Comet”, which made the UK’s aviation jet propulsion technology once the
world’s leading position. Whittle was awarded the rank of brigadier general
