the foundation of turbulence model theory. In the aspect of general relativity,
Zhou Peiyuan had been devoted to solving the definite solution of the gravitational field equation and applying it to the research of cosmology. In the
field of gravity theory, he put forward the important viewpoint that “harmony condition is physical condition". For the first time in the world, he
obtained the result that the speed of light on the earth’s surface is identical
in the horizontal direction and in the vertical direction with a relative error
of 10 −11 , which may have a significant impact on people’s understanding
of Einstein’s theory of gravity. In turbulence theory, in the early 1930s, Zhou
Peiyuan realized that the turbulent flow field is closely related to the boundary
conditions. Later, referring to the treatment method of taking quality as
integral constant in general relativity, he worked out the differential equation satisfied by Reynolds stress, and hoped to introduce the influence of
boundary conditions into the calculation formula of Reynolds stress through
the boundary conditions. In 1940, Zhou Peiyuan wrote the first paper on
turbulence, which was the first time in the world to put forward the turbulence fluctuation equation, and established the general turbulence theory by
solving the correlation function of shear stress and three-dimensional velocity
to satisfy the dynamic equation, and laid the foundation of the turbulence
model theory. In 1945, Zhou Peiyuan published an important paper Solutions
to the Equations of Velocity Correlation and Turbulence Fluctuation in the Quarterly of Applied Mathematics of the United States, and proposed two methods
to solve the turbulence motion, which had a profound impact on the development of turbulence model theory. It is the foundational work of engineering
turbulence model theory based on Reynolds stress equation (Fig. 8.40).
8.41 Kolmogorov (1903–1987)
Kolmogorov, Russian mathematician and master of turbulence statistics, was
one of the few most influential mathematicians in the twentieth century. His
research covered almost all fields of mathematics and he had made many
pioneering contributions. In 1928, he obtained the necessary and sufficient
conditions for random variable sequence to obey the law of large numbers.
In 1929, he obtained the law of iterated logarithm for independent and
identically distributed random variable sequence. In 1930, he obtained the
very general sufficient conditions for the law of large numbers. In 1931,
he published the paper Analytical Method of Probability Theory, which laid
the foundation of Markov process theory. Markov process is widely used
