shock resistance. In 1939, his student Qian Xuesen established the famous
“Karman–Tsien formula” under his guidance. In 1946, von Karman proposed
the transonic similarity law, which combined with Prandtl’s subsonic similarity law, Qian Xuesen’s hypersonic similarity law, and Akley’s supersonic
similarity law to form a complete theoretical system of compressible aerodynamics. In 1936, when the scientific community generally doubted the
rocket propulsion technology, he supported his students to study the subject.
In order to improve the performance of aircraft, especially to shorten the takeoff distance from the ground or aircraft carrier, he and Malina first proved in
1940 that they could design a solid rocket motor with stable and durable
combustion. A prototype of the takeoff booster rocket was soon developed.
This kind of rocket is also the prototype of solid rocket on the long-range
missiles of Polaris, Militia, and Poseidon. In 1941, he was involved in the
creation of the General Aviation Jet Company that made rocket engines in
the United States (Fig. 8.38).
8.39 Taylor (1886–1975)
Geoffrey Ingram Taylor (1886–1975) was a British dynamicist, whose contribution to mechanics is manifold. In terms of fluid mechanics, he clarified the
internal structure of shock wave (1910); studied atmospheric turbulence and
