the experiment, the centrifugal separator is the most effective (Fig. 8.30).
8.31 Joukowski (1847–1921)
Joukowski (1847–1921), a Russian aerodynamicist, graduated from the
Department of Physics and Mathematics of Moscow University in 1868.
In 1882, he received his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics. His thesis was On
the Permanence of Motion. In 1902, he guided the construction of the wind
tunnel of Moscow University, which was one of the earliest wind tunnels in
Europe. Since 1910, he actively participated in the preparation of the Aerodynamics Laboratory of Moscow Institute of Technology. From 1910 to 1912,
he taught the course of “theoretical basis of flight”, and in 1913, he also
taught the course for pilots. In the World War, he was engaged in the study
of bombing theory and external ballistics. After the October Revolution, he
devoted himself to the founding of the Soviet air force. In December 1918,
on his proposal, the Soviet Union established the “Central Institute of aerodynamics and hydrodynamics” and appointed him as its director. On March
17, 1921, he died in Moscow. He had made great contributions in the fields
