motion process of each fluid particle from beginning to end. This method is
now called the Lagrange method to distinguish the Euler method focusing
on space points, but in reality, this method had also been applied by Euler.
From 1764 to 1778, he was awarded the prize of French Academy of Sciences
five times for his research on celestial mechanics such as lunar translation. In
mathematics, Lagrange is one of the founders of the variational method. His
research on algebraic equations has played a leading role in the establishment
of Galois group theory (Fig. 8.10).
8.11 Laplace (1749–1827)
Pierre-Simon Laplace (1749–1827) was a French analyst, probability theorist
and physicist, and academician of the French Academy of Sciences. In 1812,
his important book Theory of Probability Analysis was published, in which
the whole research of probability theory at that time was summarized. He
had long been engaged in the study of the theory of planet motion and the
theory of moon motion, especially in the study of the solar system’s celestial perturbation, the general stability of the solar system and the dynamics
of the solar system’s stability. In the five volumes of Celestial Mechanics, a
representative work of classical celestial mechanics published from 1799 to
