From the fifteenth to the seventeenth century, Leonardo da Vinci, Galileo,
Torricelli, Pascal, and Newton studied the problems of water static pressure,
atmospheric pressure, water shear stress, and orifice outflow by experimental
methods. In 1643, Torricelli proved the basic law of constant orifice outflow
and proposed that the orifice outflow velocity is proportional to the square
root of the head value.
