Hydrodynamics
3.1 Development of Hydrodynamics
Liquid dynamics is the study of the law of the liquid at rest and motion.
Because the main research medium is water, it is also called hydrodynamics.
Human beings began to study the laws of the static and motion of liquids
very early.
In the early period of human beings, because of flood control and canal
digging, the flow law of water was summarized. For example, the book on
Mohism written by Mozi (about 478–392 BC) and his disciples discusses this
aspect. Archimedes’ calculation of buoyancy in ancient Greece is an important achievement of mechanics. Dujiangyan project in China is located in the
west of Chengdu City, Sichuan Province, and on the Minjiang River in the
west of Chengdu Plain. It was built in the last year of King Zhao of the Qin
Dynasty (about 256–251 BC). It is a large-scale water conservancy project (as
shown in Fig. 3.1) organized and built by Li Bing and his son, the governor of
Shujun County, on the basis of the excavation of Bieling by his predecessors.
It was composed of fish mouth, flying sand weir, precious-bottle-neck, etc.
For more than two thousand years, it has been playing a role in flood control
and irrigation, making Chengdu plain a “land of abundance” with thousands
of miles of water and drought. So far, the irrigation area has reached more
than 30 counties and cities, covering an area of nearly ten million mu. It is
the longest, still the only one in use in the world. The grand water conservancy project, characterized by the diversion without dam, embodies the hard
work, courage, and wisdom of the ancient Chinese working people.
