2 Implementation of EU Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) …

Fig. 2.15 The Danube floodplain with a role of wetland within the Danube Delta Biosphere Reservation
achieved almost integrally. The status of waters is relatively good and good for about
60%. The point sources of pollution—belonging to old industrial units from the
Communist period or to new and small ones—bring significant damage to the small
streams. The most important problems are related to the surface and groundwaters
within rural settlements because they are polluted by animal and human dejections
that end up straight in the bodies of water. By connecting all the localities to the sewerage system and to the water supply system, pollution will cease almost automatically
nationwide.
2.5 Recommendations
The pollution sources from the old plants storage sites are becoming more environmentally friendly and therefore pollution is substantially diminished. However, it
is necessary to ecologize by afforestation or erosion of tailings dumps that belong
to the mining companies in the northern Carpathians, the Apuseni Mountains and
Oltenia. Also, blocking emissions from abandoned quarries by coal, copper or other
non-ferrous or ferrous ores in southern and western Romania, must become a priority.
