14.4 Instruments, Data and Methods
14.4.1 Instruments
Water parameters used in this study are temperature, electrical conductivity and
pressure/level. Air parameters are temperature, relative humidity, and atmospheric
pressure. Air and water temperature measurements exist for all sites, while other
parameters were used preferentially (due to the limited number of instruments).
In order to measure water temperature, we used iButton (DS1922L-F5#—±0.5 °C
accuracy, 0.0625 °C resolution) and TruBlue (585 CTD—±0.2 °C accuracy, 0.01 °C
resolution) sensors and loggers. The TruBlue 585 CTD model was also used for
measuring the electrical conductivity (1% of reading accuracy, 1 µS/cm resolution)
and water pressure (±0.05% full-scale accuracy, 0.01% full-scale resolution; range:
0–10.8 m H 2 O). The electrical conductivity values are automatically corrected for a
reference temperature (25 °C). The pressure recorded by TruBlue was total pressure
(air + water column) and water pressure created by the water column above the
pressure sensor was obtained by using the atmospheric pressure data (difference).
Air temperature was measured with DS1921G-F5# (±1 °C accuracy, 0.5 °C resolution) and DS1923-F5# iButtons (±0.5 °C accuracy, 0.0625 °C or 0.5 °C resolution
(depending on settings, in order to gain logger memory or measurement resolution)
also used for recording the air relative humidity with a resolution of 0.6%) and with
TruBlue 275 Baro instruments (±0.1 °C accuracy, 0.01 °C resolution). TruBlue 275
Baro was used for logging the atmospheric pressure too (±0.05% full-scale accuracy,
0.01% full-scale resolution; range: 8–16 psia).
14.4.2 Data
Water temperature measurements were done in all 21 sites of this study (17 rivers).
Air temperature measurements were also conducted at all sites (Fig. 14.2). Only
some selected rivers and sites in western Romania have water electrical conductivity
and pressure measurements (1, 4, 6, 7). Air relative humidity measurements were
conducted in all sites of the western part of Romania (excepting site 7) and also in
site number 9.
Measurements in our sites were done during different time intervals, which sometimes are partly overlapping. In order to create groups of sites with common time
intervals (usually sites that are in the same area), we cut the original time series to
shorter, but common time series. All time intervals begin at 00:00 and end before
midnight. All data values were recorded at regular intervals, that vary from every
10 min to every hour.
The studied time interval of sites 1–5 is October 5th, 2016–July, 17th, 2017 (site
no. 4 has two time intervals with missing data: Nov. 21st–Dec. 1st, 2016; Jun.
