Fig. 3.43 Romanian significant impact and pressure type on groundwater bodies
Following the completion of the second River Basin Management Plan
(2010–2015), the WFD results indicate at the EU level a water ecosystems crisis,
the ecological status chart of 89,000 river water bodies indicating: 6% bad; 14%
poor; 42% moderate; 30% good and only 8% high. After nearly a century, with all
the technological and scientific advances recorded, emerging pollutants still present
unknown issues that affect our waters through chemical pollution, leading to difficulties in correlating pressures, status and impact, while analytical performance is
still limited for determination of mixtures effects of pollutants and atypical modes
of action.
Among the EU countries, Romania is one with the lowest water availability per
capita, vulnerable to the variability of precipitation and with significant variations
between wet and dry years. In Romania, water management has been organized for
almost a century (1920) based on hydrographic basins in 11 river basin authorities.
