The main economic activity is fishing, but for its unique natural and cultural
features (flora, fauna, landscape, historical and archeological sites) within the
region, this place has enormous potential in the development of tourist activities
(Andere 2017).
The community group “Women with Wings” was created in 2015 with the support of the Conservation Program for Sustainable Development (PROCODES, for
its acronym in Spanish). This program represents a national strategy to link biodiversity conservation with social and economic development through the participation of communities including women and men. “Women with Wings” is made up
of 11 women who carry out bird monitoring, environmental education, and bird
watching. The members of this group are women, mothers, housewives, wives, and
active community members of their locality, who carry out collective and individual
actions for the development and welfare of their family, their community, and the
ecosystem, which makes them agents of social change (Fig. 11.2).
Skills to Build Their Own Story
The “Women with Wings” group was built through a process of learning techniques
and skills to carry out bird monitoring activities. This process implied the coordinated participation from the group of women along with CONANP
5
officials,
5 Comisión Nacional de Areas Naturales Protegidas.
