Case Study: Natural Protected Area (NPA) Establishment
and Female Leadership
Approximately 550 km south of the city of Ensenada, Baja California there is a
town called Bahía de Los Ángeles. It is a fishing village, with a population of around
600 inhabitants. Its ecological importance places it as the site with the highest
marine productivity in the Gulf of California. This is the habitat for whales, dolphins, huge colonies of seabirds, whale sharks, sea turtles, as well as fish and invertebrates of ecological and commercial importance (Pronatura Noroeste 2014). In
2007, this area was declared a protected natural area (ANP for its acronym in
Spanish) within the Biosphere Reserve of Bahía de Los Ángeles, Canal de Ballenas y
Salsipuedes (Fig. 11.1).
