and UC Irvine. Learning to use a photographic camera to capture the birds during monitoring is one of the skills that the
group has acquired. Its members have also improved in the use of this tool and currently include stranded birds and the landscape within their photographic records.
Since these women recognize photography as a means of self-expression:
Sí porque te ponían experiencias para que hicieras tu propia historia, algo de ti, algo que te
guste…
(They shared examples of personal experiences with us in order to create our own story,
something about us, something that we were interested in)

Its members have also acquired skills on bird identification with the support of published birding field guides:
No sabíamos los nombres, pero de que las mirábamos, sí las mirábamos
(We did not know the names (of the birds), but we were sure we saw them, yes, we did
saw them)
Simultaneously to the identification of the birds, the group must fill in a field log to
build a database, for which they learned to use the computer and to develop databases. Currently, this information is shared on eBird and Naturalista, online communities of learning and sharing information about birds and other elements of
nature, where amateurs and professionals collaborate.
Capacities for Action
Capacities are related to the skills and resources to perform a task or fulfill an objective (Appendini and Nuijten 2002). “Women with Wings” meets every month to
plan and schedule activities; these meetings are also linked to the development of
other skills such as interpersonal communication and teamwork. Within the organization of activities, the group recognizes the different abilities of each member, in
order to consider them during the formation of work teams:
Ella siempre anotaba y yo siempre estoy con la foto y ahorita que agarra la cámara pues se
le dificulta o a mi anotar porque pues estaba bien acostumbrada a la foto
(She always took notes and I was always taking the pictures. Now that she has the camera, it is difficult for her to take pictures or for me to take notes, because I was so used to
taking pictures)
Planning of duties was necessary due to the reduction of financial resources for fuel
and travel expenses, either sharing paths or reducing the number of field trips per
month to optimize fieldwork and money resources. In order to accomplish the
objectives, set out on a monthly basis, they have developed a high capacity for discipline, which is reflected in a strong commitment by the women to attend to the
group’s monitoring, meetings, and activities despite the various tasks they perform
