3.2 Processing and Disposing
Hunsur CMC has set up MSW landfill site, which is about 4.5 acres and is situated
4.5 km away from the Hunsur, and it is accessible by Darga Road located at a distance
of approximately 4.5 km from the city centre. The waste is brought to the site by
auto-tipper and tractor-trailer. Wet waste is being re-segregated by workers in plant
into wet and dry wastes. Wet waste is being treated by windrow and compost pit’s
method, mixed waste from road sweeping, and drainage cleaning is dumped in heap
and periodically giving turning for aeration. After 45 days, both the treated wastes
are screened by rotary screen (installed 4 mm screen with 8-tonne capacity/day) to
get compost. One 72 HP capacity front-end loader and one skid-steer vehicle are
available in processing plant. 20 KW solar power panels are installed to replace
electricity required for running machinery and equipment in the processing plant
which reduced the O&M cost of the plant. Many IEC and farmers are approached
with programs held for compost sale. More than Rs. 1.0 lakh worth compost and Rs.
25,000 dry waste was sold in the year of 2017–2018 (Fig. 3).
Hunsur CMC has around 3 major and 15 minor biomedical waste generators.
There is a system available privately for the collection of biomedical waste (Shree
Consultancy agency) regularly.
All the bulk wastes from hotels, restaurants, kalyan mantap and meat stalls are
being managed by involving private party by PPP method which reduced the capital
cost for the same. Also, food waste from 40 hotels is being fed to 100 kg capacity
biomethanation plant installed in government hostel which is generating 0.4 cum
gas/day (Fig. 4).
Continuous IEC activities are carried out by involving NGO’s to reach all the
educational institutes and households and other stakeholders to meet ODF status and
better waste management in the city. Many IEC aids like hoardings are displayed in
the main commercial road by involving a private party. Under IEC, ward-wise, all the
details such as name and contact number are displayed by wall paintings. Ward- and
street-wise workers deployed with continues supervisory for field result. Swacchata
application and telephone-based public grievance monitored by it staff routinely.
